Quick answer
  • What it is: the ISTQB Certified Tester Gambling Industry Tester (CT-GT) certifies that you know how software and hardware are tested in the gambling industry: casinos, slot machines, video lottery terminals, sports betting and online gambling.
  • Current version: the 2019 syllabus (March 2019), in the ISTQB Specialist stream.
  • Prerequisite: the ISTQB Foundation Level (CTFL) certification.
  • Content: 3 chapters and 740 minutes (about 12 hours) of minimum training; the chapter on test types takes 435 minutes.
  • Exam: 40 questions, 40 points, pass mark 26 (65%), 60 minutes (75 if it isn't your native language). All questions are K1 or K2.
  • What sets it apart: compliance with each jurisdiction's rules, certification by independent test labs (ITLs) and game math testing (RNG and RTP).

In almost no other industry can a software defect lead a regulator to pull your product from every venue in a country or state. In gambling it can: if a machine pays out incorrectly, if its random number generator shows a pattern or if it breaks a jurisdictional rule, the manufacturer can lose its license and its spot on the casino floor. The ISTQB Gambling Industry Tester (CT-GT) certification brings together the knowledge a tester needs to work in that environment. This guide explains what it covers, what the exam looks like and how to prepare.

What CT-GT is and where it sits in the ISTQB portfolio

CT-GT belongs to the ISTQB Specialist stream, among the industry-focused certifications. Its current syllabus is the 2019 version, released in March 2019 after a technical review of the 2018 release 1.7. It was originally published as a Foundation Level specialist module.

The syllabus focuses on three areas: the industry's key concepts, its ecosystems (who develops, who manufactures, who certifies and who regulates) and the test types common in the sector. A curious detail from the document itself: the Japan board (JSTQB) decided not to introduce or certify this module.

Don't confuse it with the Game Testing (CT-GaMe) certification, which is about video games. To see both on the full map, check our ISTQB certification guide.

Who it is for and prerequisites

According to the syllabus, CT-GT is aimed at anyone in software testing who wants to broaden their knowledge of the industry, start a specialist career in it or who already tests casino and lottery software. It also targets test analysts and engineers, consultants, test managers, user acceptance testers, product managers and developers, plus anyone who needs a basic understanding of the topic: project, quality or development managers, business analysts, IT directors and consultants in the sector.

It is especially useful if you work, or want to work, for machine manufacturers, casino game developers, online casino operators, sports betting platforms, lotteries or certification labs.

Official requirements

  • Mandatory: hold the ISTQB Foundation Level (CTFL) certification before taking the exam.

The CT-GT syllabus chapter by chapter

As in other specialist syllabi, each learning objective has a minimum time (mostly 15 minutes). The chapter summary:

ChapterMinimum timeMax K-levelKey topics
1. Introduction to the gambling industry215 minK2Specific skills, game types, progressive jackpots, RNG, win selection, privacy and geolocation, regulators, metrics, lifecycle, ITLs
2. The gambling industry ecosystems90 minK2Test phases, compliance testing, VLT, slot machine and lottery ecosystems
3. Testing in the gambling industry435 minK2Gambling and wagering, math, platform, casino system, protocols, hardware, remote gambling, security, jackpot, online gambling

Chapter 1. Introduction to the gambling industry

It starts by explaining why this industry needs its own syllabus. Some testing doesn't exist in other sectors:

  • A proprietary ecosystem: hardware, firmware and operating systems unique to the industry.
  • Compliance testing: the syllabus mentions more than 440 certification boards worldwide, each with rules affecting hardware, software, platform, audio, video, math and return-to-player calculations. A single game must comply with the rules of every place it is played.
  • The fun factor: games must work, be intuitive and also be fun.
  • Math testing: pay tables, permutations, RNG results and RTP calculations.
  • Audio, multiplayer and interoperability with the open or proprietary protocols of each jurisdiction's central server.

It then defines gambling and reviews the types of games: casino games (table games, electronic gaming machines or EGMs such as slot machines and video lottery terminals or VLTs, and random number ticket games such as keno), lotteries (traditional and instant), race and sports wagering, and online and mobile gambling.

Next come key concepts you will see on the exam:

  • Progressive jackpots.
  • RNG (random number generator): the heart of any machine-based game; it is certified by an ITL or the regulator.
  • The win selection process, step by step: start of spin, the RNG generates a raw number, it is scaled to a usable number, mapped to a game element, the outcome is evaluated, credits are awarded or taken, the outcome is displayed, the prize is paid and the spin ends. Each step is a test point.
  • Player privacy and geolocation: for example, verifying that the system blocks play if the player is outside the permitted area.
  • Regulatory commissions, jurisdictions and associations.

It closes with two industry-specific metrics, first pass percentage and escaped compliance defects (the resubmittal factor and the number of revocations), and the development lifecycle: concept and design, Alpha phase, Code Complete, Beta Build with pre-certification testing, and Release Build, which goes to the independent test lab (ITL) for certification before the regulator approves the game.

Chapter 2. The gambling industry ecosystems

It describes the test phases. First, internal gambling quality assurance, which follows the ISTQB test process and includes localization, functional, performance, memory leak, installability, portability, system integration, operational, pre-compliance and customer acceptance testing. Then compliance testing against each jurisdiction's specifications: rules of play, RNG and payout percentages, bonus games, electronic metering, game history, power-up and power-down, and permitted configurations.

It also explains who's who in the ecosystem (game developers, machine manufacturers, independent test labs and regulatory commissions) and the specific ecosystems of VLTs, slot machines and lotteries. Example: a VLT can generate the outcome on the terminal itself or on a central server, and each architecture changes what is tested and where.

Chapter 3. Testing in the gambling industry

The longest chapter (435 minutes) walks through each type of testing and its functional and compliance versions:

  • Gambling and wagering testing: functionality, common defects and compliance for casino games.
  • Math testing: the tester doesn't design the math, but verifies that the RNG shows no patterns, that the implementation matches the PAR sheet (the document detailing the pay table, symbols per reel, RTP, hit frequency, volatility and jackpot odds) and that jurisdictional rules are met. Example: if a jurisdiction requires a minimum RTP, you must confirm the chosen configuration respects it.
  • Platform testing: the base software the games run on.
  • Casino system testing: machine management, accounting and loyalty programs.
  • Protocol testing: communication between machines and central systems, with standards such as G2S (Game to System).
  • Hardware testing: functional, compliance and integration testing (bill validators, ticket printers, displays, buttons).
  • Remote gambling, system and network security and jackpot controllers.
  • Online gambling: RNG and RTP, player registration and protection, payment gateway transactions, geolocation, collusion detection in multiplayer games, tournaments, game history and audit logs, browser and device compatibility, load testing and affiliate testing.

How to prepare for CT-GT

Cool Testers doesn't currently offer a dedicated CT-GT course. Here is the path we recommend:

  1. Start with Foundation Level. It is mandatory, and the gambling syllabus builds on the CTFL test process, test types and sequential model. Take our ISTQB Foundation Level (CTFL 4.0) course, with 40 live hours, a pre-recorded course, an Express review course and 4 practice exams, and plan your path with the ISTQB certification guide.
  2. Master the glossary and acronyms: EGM, VLT, RNG, RTP, ITL, PAR, G2S, first pass, revocation. The syllabus includes an acronym table and a domain glossary; it is your best tool, because the exam is almost all K2.
  3. Map the ecosystem: who develops, who manufactures, who certifies and who approves, and at which lifecycle phase each one steps in.
  4. Build a table for each test type in chapter 3 with two columns: what functional testing covers and what compliance testing covers. Many questions play on that difference.
  5. Practice with the syllabus PAR sheet: interpret RTP, hit frequency and volatility for each row.
  6. Take the official sample exam.

Benefits and career paths

  • A regulated, specialized industry: knowledge of jurisdictional compliance, ITLs and game math isn't learned in other sectors, which makes people who master it scarcer.
  • A common vocabulary with the industry: it helps you integrate quickly into manufacturer, operator or lab teams.
  • Transferable: what you learn about compliance, auditing, payments and security is valuable in other regulated industries, such as finance.

Related roles: casino game QA tester, compliance tester, math and RNG test analyst, online betting platform tester, certification lab test engineer.
